Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 2017.
Student-athletes (SAs) attend colleges and universities within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for the perceived purpose of getting an education while they commit to participate at a high level of athletic competition for their institution. The SAs ascribe to the roles of student and athlete on a weekly basis that ultimately contribute to their multidimensional self-concept. The social psychological concept of identity described as 'self' is to experience an instinctive process to label, classify, or name itself in an effort to give oneself identification (Stets & Burke, 2000). Scholars recognize the concept of identity through the lens of Identity Theory as an important approach to the study of academic and sport role-related behavior (Adler & Adler, 1987; Curry & Weaner, 1987; Sturm et al., 2011; Finch, 2007). The Role Identity Rating measures the saliency of one's role identity.

The primary problem this study attempts to explain is the fluid, complex, and cumulative effect of the existing struggle between the athlete and student roles for college SAs. The primary purpose of this study is to examine the levels of athletic identification and student identification among college NCAA Division II SAs and then examine the possibly influences the levels have on the SA's role identities for athlete and student. The secondary purpose of this study is to examine the dimensions commonly used to measure athletic identification and student identification by attempting to establish criterion validity for each of the five scales measuring athletic identification -- public, private, social identity, exclusivity, negative affectivity -- and the lone scale measuring student identification.

The investigator received a usable sample N=204. Preliminary data show the SAs commit to the Student Role (M=89.59) more than their Athlete Role (M=79.45). The results displayed criterion validity for two athletic identification scales, Social Identity (beta ˆ = 3.274, p < 0.001) and Exclusivity (beta ˆ = 3.186, p < 0.001), as well as the Measurement of Student Identity scale (beta ˆ = 0.536, p < 0.001). Further analysis revealed being Female (beta ˆ = 3.599, p < 0.05) to be an influence on the Student Role, but showed no significance on the Athlete Role.
