Thesis (Psy.D.)--The University of the Rockies, 2016.
The purpose of this study was to expand the theoretical framework from which professionals understand collegiate student-athletes while solidifying a way to assess them in the applied realms of the field. Specifically, this study intended to strengthen the psychometric properties of the newly developed Academic and Athletic Identity Scale (AAIS; Yukhymenko-Lescroart, 2014). This quantitative study used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and various correlation coefficients to psychometrically establish validity and reliability for the AAIS. After gaining institutional permission, 91 collegiate student-athletes from various institutions around the country were surveyed and asked to take the AAIS, Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS), and answer a few demographic questions. Using CFA, the original proposed model of the AAIS was shown to have poor fit and after further analysis, a modified model was presented that showed much greater fit. The athletic identity subscale on the AAIS was shown to have significant statistical correlation to the AIMS. The academic identity subscale on the AAIS was also shown to have strong correlation to GPA. Two unexpected findings from the research questions were that the statistical analyses showed that there were no gender differences on the AAIS and that year in school of the participants was not shown to correlate with their AAIS or AIMS scores.
