Thesis (D.C.S.)--Colorado Technical University, 2018.
The research completed for this project seeks answers to the question of whether improvements to brain/computer interfaces (BCI) could assist with advancing the current technology in human/computer interfaces (HCI). The study method of design science research (DSR) used for this project involved designing and developing a symbolic communication protocol. Participants evaluated the protocol, described perceived meaning and degree of understanding of the symbolic elements. Analysis applied qualitative methods with additional quantitative techniques where possible. The results showed that the symbolic communication protocols for BCI technology need improvement in areas of clarity and representative aspects. This document explains the theoretical basis for this study, reviews the scientific literature, and presents detailed research processes. A scholarly artifact accompanies the dissertation as a complete guide for replicating this study or a similar research project.
