Walking problems of children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) such as atypical gait patterns, changed stride parameters, decreased mechanical energy exchange, and side-toside asymmetry in body center of mass (COM) motion have been conventionally viewed as symptoms resulting from the associated brain injuries. In contrast to this view, Holt and his colleagues have claimed that such walking "problems" are adaptations to the changed dynamic resources available to children with spastic CP. Dynamic resources refer to an individual's capability to generate, dissipate, or conserve the energy required to locomote or, more generally to perform any skilled sensorimotor task. Previous studies have demonstrated that children with spastic CP have decreased active force production capability. This leads to an adaptive increase in system's passive elastic energy utilization. Based on this claim, the current project used Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) on Gastrocnemius-Soleus muscle complex (G-S) and examined the efficacy of FES to enhance force production capability for children with spastic CP.
