The Palo Alto Children's Theatre in Palo Alto, California is the oldest theatre in the United States to maintain its original format of theatre by and for children. Established in 1932 by Hazel Glaister Robertson, this community-based program has been credited as being the first municipally funded children's theatre in the United States and the first to have a facility built exclusively for its own use. Three generations of citizens have had some contact with the Palo Alto Children's Theatre, either as participants or audience members. The purpose of this investigation was to trace the history of the Palo Alto Children's Theatre from its inception in 1932 to 1997, focusing on the artistic, social and educational programs it has provided.

520 $a The consistency in artistic and organizational leadership was provided by two women, founder director Hazel Glaister Robertson who served from 1932 to 1953, and Patricia Briggs who has served from 1961 to the present. These two leaders have played the most significant roles in the continued survival of PACT during the past sixty-five years. Through their efforts and the support of the community, the theatre has provided a valuable artistic, social and educational resource. While maintaining its objectives throughout the years, the theatre's programs have been adapted and expanded to meet the changing needs of young people. Currently its programs serve young people between the ages of eight and twenty-four, offering thirty-six classes and workshops and averaging twenty productions each year. In addition, its Outreach Program provides student cast productions to approximately seven public schools a year.
520 $a Included in the study are profiles of the leaders, their philosophies, descriptions of the programs and the role of the community in supporting this institution. Interviews with former staff and students from 1932 through the present have revealed the artistic as well as the social impact this institution has had on their lives. The opportunity to observe productions and the program under the current director Pat Briggs, enabled the researcher to provide a first-hand report of theatre activities.
520 $a Through this study, the researcher has identified three main components that have contributed to the success and longevity of the Palo Alto Children's Theatre: community support, stability in leadership and high quality programs and productions.
