Michael Moore's documentary films showcase political issues in ways that challenge the conventions of modern documentary filmmaking. Although most documentary filmmakers consciously focus their cameras on the events they seek to document (see HBO's Vice News series, the British Up series, or Josh Fox's Gasland ), Michael Moore is known to frequently disrupt this tradition by inserting his own comedic performance into the events in an attempt to center his narrative. In this way, Moore's "created events" more closely resemble clowning performances than the more objective recording of modern documentary filmmaking. I intend to analyze Michael Moore's films, with a central focus on his first film Roger and Me (1989), as well as Bowling for Columbine (2002), and Sicko (2007) -- focusing on Moore's created events as clowning performances, to define his theatrical interventions within the cinematic form he purports to use. By creating a critical lens from theory and scholarship within the field of performance, and using examples from works by Jon Davison, David Wiles, Donald McManus, and other prominent performance and clowning scholars, this study aims to establish and analyze the synthesis of clown performance and recorded events that Moore employs in his documentary films. Ultimately, I hope to use this approach to break down the traditional barrier separating the art of clown and film studies, which no longer reflects the ways in which we produce and consume media, as well as identify the traditional clowning techniques Moore has cultivated to create his political messages in his documentary films.
