There are over 450,000 student-athletes competing in NCAA sporting events. All of those student-athletes are at risk of athletic related injuries. How student-athletes cope with their injuries can affect them emotionally and physically. The problem is there is no standard way to identify what coping functions an injured student-athletes uses during rehabilitation. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if there is a relationship between personality traits and coping functions and which coping function is most prevalent for each personality trait for injured student-athletes. The theoretical framework for this study was made up of the Lazarus Theory of Appraisal and Coping, and Trait Theory. This study used a quantitative methodology and a correlational design to answer the following research questions. RQ1: Is there a relationship between personality trait and coping function in injured student-athletes? RQ2: What coping function is most prevalent for each personality trait? A total of 132 injured student-athletes participated in this study. To participate, student-athletes voluntarily completed an anonymous online questionnaire consisting of the Big Five Personality Assessment and the Coping Function Questionnaire for Sport. A chi-square test of independence, Cramer's V, and Fisher's exact test were conducted to examine the relationship between personality type and coping function. The findings of the statistical analyses for RQ1 indicated that there was a statistically significant relationship between personality trait and coping function. The findings for RQ2 indicated there is a prevalent coping function for each personality trait. The implication of this finding is that personality traits need to be taken into consideration when rehabilitating an injured student-athlete. Clinicians need to implement a way of determining personality traits for their student-athletes in order to better facilitate the rehabilitation process. Future research should further investigate coping as it relates to primary and secondary personality traits as well.
