The purpose of this study was to discover whether perfectionism, body dissatisfaction, and social appearance anxiety are experienced differently in self-described college aged athletes and non-athletes. Past research on perfectionism has found a relationship between self-critical attitudes and negative body ideals that perfectionists tend to exhibit (Shanmugam & Davies, 2015). Athletes of all sports are often subjected to different body requirements that can lead to the development of social appearance anxiety (SAA). Both perfectionism and SAA can influence an individual's dissatisfaction with their body. Body dissatisfaction can affect one's feelings leading to negative evaluations about how one's body is perceived by others and themselves (Glashouwer, Bennik, de Jong, Spruyt, 2018). To date, little research has been done investigating the role of perfectionism, social appearance anxiety, and body dissatisfaction in college athletes. It was hypothesized that athletes would have significantly higher levels of perfectionism and social appearance anxiety and lower levels of body satisfaction in comparison to non-athletes. In the present study, a total of 152 male and female participants, ages 18-35 years, completed a battery of questionnaires consisting of: a Demographic Questionnaire, a Sports Questionnaire, an Athleticism Questionnaire, the Clinical Perfectionism Questionnaire - Revised (Dickie, Surgenor, Wilson, & McDowall, 2012), the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS; Hart, Flora, Palyo, Fresco, Holle, & Heimberg, 2008), and the Body Satisfaction Scale (BSS; Slade, Dewey, Newton, Brodie, & Kiemle, 1990). The anonymous questionnaires were completed online. No significant differences were found between athletes and non-athletes regarding the variables of perfectionism and social appearance anxiety. A significant difference was found regarding body satisfaction with athletes scoring higher than non-athletes. Post-hoc analyses were also conducted to compare males and females, on athleticism and perfectionism, and no significant differences were found. A correlational analysis was also completed to compare athleticism with perfectionism, body satisfaction, and social appearance anxiety. The results indicated that body satisfaction had a significant positive correlation with athleticism whereas social appearance anxiety had a significant negative correlation with athleticism. Perfectionism and athleticism had no significant correlation. Limitations and implications of the research were discussed to provide guidance to clinicians working with college athletes.
