This study focuses on the lived experiences of athletes who have experienced career-ending injuries in their sport. Three athletes (two collegiate and one semi-professional) participated in a phenomenological interview. The interviews were analyzed for common themes that may be present during the experience of an injury, as well as how the athletes lived out several phenomena innate to the human experience. The results indicated that identity concerns, limited ability, emotional distress, life concerns and external pressures, rehabilitation difficulties, and the importance of social support are being key commonalities in the experiences of the athletes. Further, results showed the unique way in which the athletes lived out human phenomena. As such, it can be concluded that while there may be common characteristics in the injury experience, the athletes experience them in their unique and individual manner. This study then supports the idea that psychologists should be involved in the recovery and rehabilitation treatment of the athlete's injury, as there are significant and numerous mental difficulties that arise for each individual, which are often overlooked.
