This study aimed to understand the association between meaning in life (MIL), adolescent-parent attachment (APA), and Internet addiction (IA) among Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong. No prior study has considered all three variables together. The current study expanded the scope of research by investigating causal factors of Internet addiction by including both a systematic and an individual variable. In this study we used survey data collection to measure the associations among Internet addiction, meaning in life, and adolescent-parent attachment. A random selection of 155 students aged between 12 and 19 years old were asked to participate in the research study. The results showed that Internet addiction and adolescent-father attachment were moderately negatively correlated, r (153) = -.57, p < .01. In addition, Internet addiction and adolescent-mother attachment were moderately negatively correlated, r (153) = -.54, p < .01. In summary, there were significant correlations between both adolescent-father attachment and adolescent-mother attachment with Internet addiction. Furthermore, Internet addiction and the subscales of meaning in life (presence of meaning scores) were found to be correlated, r (153) = -.46, p < .01. At the same time, Internet addiction and the subscales of meaning in life MIL (search for meaning scores), were correlated, r (153) = -.35, p < .01, showing a moderate correlation between the search for meaning and Internet addiction. Stepwise multiple regression outcomes showed that the adolescent-father attachment significantly predicted Internet addiction (F(1, 153) = 74.43, p < .05, R2 = .33, R2Adjusted = .32). In addition, the presence of meaning was included in the stepwise multiple regression, and the analysis yielded a significant result and an increase of 0.3 R2 (F(3, 151) = 34.64, p < .05, R2 = .41, R2Adjusted = .41). In conclusion, the single best variable to predict Internet addiction was adolescent-father attachment. Future studies could further investigate the impact of adolescent-father attachment to include the parenting style, the role of the father, and gender differences in the father's influence and attachment. Future studies also might explore the moderating and mediating effect between MIL, APA, and IA in order to provide a deeper understanding of how APA and MIL to adolescent IA.
