The primary investigator sought to understand four women's lived experience of showing in their first pregnancy pregnancy through feminist existential-phenomenological interviews. Most unanimously, showing was a harbinger that the pregnancy was real and irreversible, something which exacerbated the ambivalence and uncertainty the women interviewed were already experiencing. The women also feared looking like a 'fat pregnant woman,' marking a departure from prior studies which found that women were mostly concerned with looking fat before they appeared discernibly pregnant. Additionally, women felt the gaze of the other upon them through unsolicited comments and advice. The often-silenced pain in each of the women suggest very particular experiences of the 'showing' phenomenon which call into question current practices of care around pregnancy and with women more generally.
