Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2010.
This study explored lesbian dyadic processes and social support. Satisfaction with social support networks and attitudes toward post breakup connectedness were assessed among partners of 23 lesbian couples. Post breakup connectedness (PBC) refers to the tendency for lesbians to maintain significant contact with ex-lovers; this relational phenomenon is conceptualized in this study as an extension of fusion. Results were heavily skewed toward high levels of satisfaction with support providers, and also indicated that lesbians generally held favorable attitudes towards maintaining PBC. While findings demonstrate that PBC with ex-lovers may be common in the lesbian community, results do not suggest that this is a universal phenomenon. Implications are discussed, and new conceptualizations of intimacy in lesbian relationships are highlighted.
