Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2018.
The aims of this study were to help educators and clinicians better identify and understand the different participation levels of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in different classroom settings. This study established the psychometric integrity of the Chinese version of the Participation and Environment Measure -- Children and Youth (CPEM-CY), compared the participation levels of children with ASDs in inclusive versus specialized settings across different contexts (at home, at school, and in the community), and explored the relationships between the participation levels of those children in inclusive settings and the amount of weekly school time they spend in resource rooms. The CPEM-CY was supported as a reliable and valid measure for use in Taiwanese culture.

Additionally, studies reviewed for this work offered extensive knowledge about participation patterns and environmental factors influencing participation at home, at school, and in the community. Such information aids occupational therapists' clinical practice, as well as future research and decision-making among health care providers and policymakers. In the main exploratory portion of this study, the findings indicate that "children with ASDs in inclusive versus specialized settings" is the predictor that contributes to community participation involvement but not home and school participation levels. Additionally, no statistically significant relationship was found between the amount of time these children spend in resource rooms and participation frequency and participation involvement at home, at school, and in the community. Understanding the participation levels of children with ASDs in inclusive versus specialized settings can benefit children, parents, occupational therapists, educators, and clinicians. This study provides Taiwanese educators and professionals with a comprehensive way to assess the participation levels of children with ASDs. It also enables international researchers to validate the instrument in their own areas of research interests.
