Romantic couples engage in rituals as a way to communicate closeness, commitment, and desire to each other and to the relationship. Intimacy rituals are one type of ritual used to express attraction and affection through physical and sexual interactions between romantic partners. Preliminary research suggests that creation of and engagement in rituals are related to traits of adult romantic attachment and relationship satisfaction (Crespo et al., 2008; Leon & Jacobvitz, 2003). Although these findings suggest an association between intimacy rituals and adult romantic attachment, this relationship has yet to be explored. Additionally, research has yet to consider the impact of using intimacy rituals on sexual satisfaction, despite sexual interaction being a prominent component of intimacy rituals (Pearson et al., 2009).

This cross-sectional study explored the causal relationship between adult romantic attachment, use of intimacy rituals, sexual satisfaction, and relationship satisfaction among romantic couples. A diverse sample of participants in romantic relationships living in the United States was recruited. Participant responses to an online survey were quantitatively analyzed using multiple regressions and structural equation modeling with path analysis. Results demonstrated a positive association between use of intimacy rituals and relationship satisfaction. Attachment security and anxiety were positively associated with the use of intimacy rituals, and attachment avoidance was negatively associated with use of intimacy rituals. Use of intimacy rituals was not significantly related to sexual satisfaction. Results also revealed how use of intimacy rituals uniquely contributes to relationship satisfaction regardless of levels of attachment security or attachment avoidance. SEM results demonstrate that attachment avoidance, attachment anxiety, use of intimacy rituals, sexual satisfaction, and relationship satisfaction all have an overall significantly meaningful relationship.

This study contributes to the theoretical understanding of how intimacy rituals and adult romantic attachment are related to one another, as well as how they intersect to impact overall relationship satisfaction. Results also demonstrate unique ways using intimacy rituals relate to relationship satisfaction beyond traits of adult romantic attachment. Findings also inform techniques used by therapist working with romantic partners, especially those having difficulty communicating shared meaning through expressions of intimacy.
