Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 2018.
This study explores the life experiences of Black former football players at the University of Michigan, an athletically and academically elite Division I school. The history of Blacks in college football has been both inspiring and insidious. While some of Black athletes have experienced upward social mobility through sports, many others have had challenges navigating the complexity of college environments and college football. The purpose of this study is twofold. First, is to examine the ways that Black football players were directly and indirectly impacted by the development and characteristics of the university and the athletic department. The second purpose is to reveal the challenges they faced in that environment and the ways that they navigated their college experiences. Ultimately, this study has two main goals: • To reveal ways that background factors mediate and complicate issues that arise during the college experiences of Black football players who play for academically and athletically competitive colleges and universities. • To identify institutional and historical factors that contribute to the college experiences of Black football players. These goals will provide a better understanding of the complexity of the college experiences of Black student athletes for stakeholders such as coaches/athletic department staff, university administrators, faculty, parents and student athletes themselves.
