The purpose of this study was to examine if a positive relationship existed between athletic participation and African-American, 11th grade males in the areas of academic performance, student discipline, and attendance rates in a large suburban Chicagoland high school. Participation in extra-curricular activities plays an important role for students engaged in the high school experience. This study, through a quantitative, comparative, ex post facto design, measured data collected from a specific student population. Data collected suggested that no statistically significant relationship existed between athletic participation and academic success, which included the American College Test (ACT) and grade point average (GPA). However, African-American students who did not participate in athletics maintained a higher mean GPA (3.74) than African Americans who were part of an athletic team (3.58). The data also showed that mean ACT scores were higher for non-athletes (18.18) than non-athletes (17.62). The collected data regarding attendance that included class tardiness and truant/unexcused absence from school also displayed no statistically significant relationship exists for African-Americans who participate in athletics. Nevertheless, the data did show that African-American athletes did have a lower mean of class tardiness and truancy from school. Regarding discipline, collected data did suggest that a positive relationship exists between athletic participation and student discipline, which included Friday night detentions and suspensions. African-American athletes received a lower mean average of both Friday night detentions and suspension.
