The problem addressed in this study is that health educators have been found to be susceptible to body image issues that affect their views of themselves, their confidence, and their ability to teach. Health educators act as role models to students and are responsible for ensuring that students have access to a curriculum that encourages healthy self-esteem and positive body image. Teachers' roles may become more complex when the body image issues that they suffer from directly or indirectly influences their students' own body image. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative case study was to understand the self-reported perceptions of body image among female secondary school health educators teaching in suburban and urban public school districts in the United States. This study was also conducted to clarify how health educators' self-reported perceptions of body image affect their teaching of health in urban and suburban school districts in the United States. A purposeful sample of 19 female secondary school health educators from 6 geographical regions within the United States who taught in urban and suburban school districts was selected. A qualitative survey instrument was developed to help participants state their self-reported perceptions about categories and dimensions related to body image. Qualitative data was preened, coded, categorized and analyzed for patterns and themes using thematic content analysis in Atlas.Ti software. Seven core themes emerged in the data analysis: (a) body image struggles: self consciousness, body comparisons and dissatisfaction (b) socio-cognitive and cultural Influences on perceptions (c) physical perceptions: fit, athletic and Positive (d) confidence when teaching (e) personal body image experiences and perceptions influencing instruction (f) educator perceptions regarding how societal ideals influence what they teach and (g) health educator perceptions regarding practices and challenges. Implications of the study involved health educators' confidence, their positions as role models and past life events --- all of which inform the health instruction process. Based on the study's results, several recommendations for practice and future research were suggested. A four-part plan was created to assist in diffusing body image struggles that health educators have and to strengthen the health education program process where body image is concerned. Further research could be focused on (a) observing how the behavior of health educators' influence students' perceptions or beliefs about body image (b) the exploration of factors that contribute to high or low confidence in teachers who educate students about body image and (c) understanding the relationships between levels of confidence in teachers and body image outcomes of students.
