Thesis (M.A.)--Mills College, 2018.
Organ transplantation has become one of the major treatments for childhood diseases caused by serious organ dysfunction (Lochridge, Wolff, Olivia, & O'Sullivan-Oliveira, 2013); however, patients have to live with the ongoing chronic illness accompanied by daily treatment, unpleasant side effects, the fear of graft dysfunction, and continuous medical supervision (Manificat et al., 2003). The intention of this study was investigating appropriate child life intervention through gaining in-depth understanding on how children and families are psychosocially affected in pediatric organ transplant experience. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four child life specialists who are working with pediatric organ transplant populations. Results of this study indicated that children and families face various psychosocial challenges in the life-long journey of pediatric organ transplant. Furthermore, this study contributed to further exploration of the efficacy and importance of child life interventions upon this population.
