Obesity in childhood is a risk factor for health issues and mental health conditions both in the short and long-term. Social and environmental factors such as maternal depression, domestic violence, socioeconomic status, and race are associated with greater risk for overweight/obesity. Relatedly, father engagement has been linked to risky behaviors among children, but limited data exist on the influences of father engagement early in life on children's weight later in life. The present study utilized longitudinal data from The Fragile Families & Child Wellbeing study, a cohort of &sim;5000 parents and children residing in 20 large US cities. Thirteen survey items describing activities that fathers engaged in with their children were used to calculate a mean father engagement score, dichotomized as high versus low engagement. Chi-square tests, multinomial logistic regression, and one-way ANOVA tests were used to examine the extent to which father engagement at age 3 predicted overweight or obesity at age 9. Stratified models and Breslow-day tests were used to detect effect modification. Among the 1996 children in the sample, 16.6% were classified as overweight, and 26.3% were classified as obese. In multivariable logistic regression models, low versus high father engagement at age 3 years was associated with obesity at age 9 years (OR= 2.48, 95% CI: 1.08-5.73) among children with married parents but not among those with unmarried parents. The intensity of father engagement in early childhood may influence later obesity risk among children and parents' marital status appears to modify this effect. Since obesity is a multi-level issue, interventions targeting childhood obesity should examine specific mechanisms through which father engagement can impact child weight.
