Thesis (M.A.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2017.
Eating disorders amongst young women and girls has become an increasingly prevalent issue in our society and a topic of conversation that has greatly diminished. Although the exact cause of eating disorders are unknown, research has shown that a combination of biological, psychological, sociocultural, family structural, and environmental abnormalities contribute to the development of these illnesses. Some scholars have proclaimed in their studies that individuals who have an eating disorder are in a "fad" or a "phase"; that their disorder is not real. The fact of the matter is that eating disorders are a true, complex medical illness and those affected can suffer serious consequences that can greatly affect their health, their productivity, and even how they create and develop relationships with others. The purpose of this study is to continue to press the urgency to educate young women and girls to prevent eating disorders. Additionally, this research will also educate students of the general population, parents, teachers, and schools an awareness of this topic, to counteract the many misconceptions and myths, and to answer the questions that arise from the general public. This research is crafted using a qualitative study methodology by conducting a 26-question survey for college female students, investigating their attitudes, perceptions, and behavior on eating disorders and their own eating habits.
