The incidence and prevalence of type 2 diabetes are on the rise at an epidemic rate among children and adolescents, driven primarily by the concurrent obesity epidemic occurring among these populations. More information is needed about how to detect type 2 diabetes mellitus in children and adolescents early in the disease process to begin treatment and prevent damage from the disease to the fullest extent possible. There is a growing need for additional research in this particular area of diabetes as the population affected by this condition has changed from middle age to younger groups, and not all of the screening approaches have been thoroughly tested in younger age groups. This study used a qualitative phenomenological approach collaborating with medical providers at an urban community healthcare clinic to explore and understand the different screening methods used by providers working with youth to identify type 2 diabetes. The goal of this research was to facilitate a process to help a group of providers to reach consensus on the use of a consistent screening approach for type 2 diabetes in the child and adolescent populations served. By the end of the process, all four providers welcomed the implementation of a standardized type 2 diabetes lab screening protocol and suggested a design change to the electronic medical record that would automatically remind the provider, based on patient demographics and health data, when screening for diabetes was indicated.
