Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2018.
This qualitative study uses semi-structured interviews to explore the experiences of six former participants in the New Jersey Young Playwrights Festival (NJYPF). The NJYPF has a 35-year history of developing and producing plays written by youth in fourth to twelfth grades within the state of New Jersey. Each of the research participants submitted scripts to the festival that were selected for performance by professional actors at different periods between 1984 and 2013. Now adults, participants reflected upon their experiences with the program and made meaning of how those experiences applied to college/career choices, personal development, and current professional work.

The research was conducted with a reflective practitioner framework as the researcher was also the coordinator for the NJYPF. Participant interviews were transcribed and analyzed using the Listening Guide Method (Gilligan, Spencer, Weinberg, Bertsch, 2003) and narrative analysis (Riessman, 2008). A review of the literature places the respondents' experiences within the historical context of the NJYPF and the field of young playwrights programs as a whole. Additionally, the festival process is compared with the immersive learning outcomes anticipated via arts education theories such as experiential learning (Dewey, 1934; James & Williams, 2017; Kolb, 2014; Scogin, Kruger, Jekkels, & Steinfeldt, 2017) and Mantle of the Expert (Heathcote & Bolton, 1995; Landy & Montgomery, 2012).

Data analysis reveals how engaging in the role of playwright during rehearsals of their plays factored into participants' personal development with an emerging self-identity that led to significant choices regarding long-range impact. Additionally, respondents who did not view themselves as strong writers emerged from the program with increased confidence in their writing ability and were eager to continue writing in creative and academic settings in the future.

In conclusion, the researcher offers modifications to the NJYPF purpose and process to maximize potential for student learning in the role of playwright. These recommendations include structural adjustments to incorporate elements of Mantle of the Expert method, among others. Additional recommendations are offered to the young playwrights field at large and ideas are presented for research to further define and explore the field as it exists within the United States and abroad.
