The purpose of this study was to examine the predictability of selected demographic and correctional institutional factors of the psychosocial functioning of young adults whose parents are or were incarcerated. Specifically, this study was concerned with the predictive power of demographic (gender, age and race) and correctional institutional (number of incarcerations, type of crime committed, and length of sentence) factors on the attachment, conduct, hyperactivity, emotional well-being, parent-child relationship, and child-peer relationship components of psychosocial functions among young adults whose parents are or were incarcerated.

A correlational research design was employed in the study. Ninety (90) young adults between the ages of 18 and 21 years old were selected to participate in the study. The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and the Parental Incarceration Screening Tool were used to collect the data. The three instruments were found to have excellent content validity. The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment was found to have internal consistency reliability coefficients ranging from .87 to .92. In addition, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire was found to have test-retest reliability ranging from .70 to .85. Finally, the data were treated through the application of the Pearson Product Moment Correlation, Bi-serial Correlation, Multiple Correlation Coefficient, and the Standard Multiple Regression Procedures.

Among the conclusions of this study was that the demographic variable race had the most predictive power with respect to the attachment to friends, conduct, hyperactivity, and emotional well-being psychosocial function scores of young adults whose parents are or were incarcerated. Correctional and institutional characteristics such as number of incarcerations, type of crime committed, and length of sentence were found to be reliable predictors with respect to the attachment to friends, psychosocial scores of young adults whose parents are or were incarcerated. It appeared that correctional institutional factors (number of incarcerations, type of crime committed and length of time of sentence) had no predictive power with regard to the conduct, hyperactivity, emotional well-being and parent-child relationship psychosocial function scores of young adults whose parents are or were incarcerated.
