Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2017.
The independent film category has grown in recent years adding a new form of storytelling to popular culture. These films tend to describe views of life that are less traditional than their Hollywood counterparts. The evocative nature of independent films and the unconventional stories they tell appears to affect viewers in heighted awareness and emotion about life. This study examined the moral experience of independent film viewing and viewers' expressions of how it influenced their ideas for future prosocial behavior in their own lives. The study expands upon recent research that has investigated moral intuition and motivation in entertainment media. Independent films were identified in this study as a distinct category of film entertainment, which had not been addressed in the research literature. It acknowledged independent films as a unique product category in how they are created and screened. The relevance of the study is related to the growth in the independent film category and corresponding consumer demand for the film type, as well as the apparent influence of the film type on Hollywood tradition. This study addressed the emotion and potential positive effect on viewers of this film type. Such films appear to hold social value to those that view them. The moral experience of independent films and the viewers' potential for inspired positive change seemed a likely area of study that had not gained much scientific attention. A generic qualitative inquiry method was used to investigate the experience in depth and used individual, open-ended discussions after viewing a short independent film. The data collected was analyzed using a thematic approach that generated six themes describing the viewing experience. Fifteen adult consumers of independent films provided input regarding their viewing experience of a short film. The analysis produced six themes describing the experience ranging from emotion to predicted change one's future behavior future. The study's findings demonstrated that individuals do experience a consistently high level of moral emotions that align with theories being examined in current media entertainment research. Likewise, viewers articulated specific ideas about how their future behavior may positively change or verified how they were reminded of their own moral ethics. These comments related directly to their moral emotions and intuitions described during the interview discussions. The study findings indicated that moral intuition and specific awareness that viewers' have regarding their future behavior characterized the experience of viewing a short independent film.
