This study investigates emerging adult use of emojis in developing interpersonal relationships. Minimal research exists on emoji use, specifically in regards to daily mediated communication. This study utilizes a theoretical framework, symbolic interactionism (Blumer, 1969; Mead, 1934), to explore how emojis have become ubiquitous in communication. As such, this study posits emojis in emerging adult interpersonal relationships, and utilizes the relationship development model (e.g., Knapp, 1984; Knapp & Vangelisti, 2010) to understand how romantic partners, friends, and family members initiate, utilize, and garner meaning through symbolic inclusion in mediated communication contexts. Study 1 utilized in-depth interview responses in order to qualitatively analyze and determine senders' reason(s) for encoding images and the receiver's interpretation of the symbols. Study 2 quantitatively investigated emerging adult emoji use across friendships, romantic relationships, and familial interactions. Results indicated that emerging adults utilize varying types of emojis depending on the type of interpersonal relationship, particularly with heart emojis in romantic relationships.
