Research in LGBTQ issues indicates that mental health providers do not believe they are adequately prepared or competent to provide services to individuals in the LGBTQ communities, and likewise, LGBTQ individuals are reporting dissatisfaction of mental health services received. The present study attempted to respond to the needs of the LGBTQ communities and build upon existing research by empirically evaluating the impact of a course in LGBTQ issues. The study utilized quantitative methods to examine the impact of a LGBTQ course on mental health providers' competency in LGBTQ issues in the context of a graduate psychology training program. A pre- and post-test and comparison group were used to evaluate the impact of a LGBTQ course on the development of mental health providers' competency. The results indicated that mental health providers-in-training who received the LGBTQ-specific course significantly improved in their LGBTQ competency as measured by the LGBT Ally Identity Development Scale and compared to those mental health providers-in-training who did not take the course. The results also indicated that mental health providers-in-training who took the LGBTQ-specific course did not improve in their Sexual Orientation Counselor Competency Scale scores from pre- to post-test nor the comparison group. The findings of the research are discussed including possible explanations for why the findings occurred, as well as limitations and clinical implications.
