Autism Spectrum Disorder is associated with comorbid psychiatric symptoms and disorders. The most common among these comorbid disorders are anxiety, depression, ADHD, and intellectual disability. Previous research has examined how children with ASD and these comorbid disorders function and differ from typically developing children, as well as children with these disorders without ASD. However, previous research has often focused on specific disorders, symptoms, or used symptom specific measures. The Behavior Assessment System Children, 2nd Edition (BASC-2) is a broad measure of behavioral, emotional, and adaptive functioning in children and adolescents commonly used in clinical settings and research. It has strong psychometric properties and is considered a strong evidence based assessment tool. The current study compared children with ASD to non-typically developing children and typically developing children on the BASC-2, and examined how behavioral and emotional symptoms may differ among individuals with ASD with low and high cognitive functioning. Data was collected from the USA Psychology Clinic, USA Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Clinic, and Eastern Shore Developmental Clinic. Additionally, a control group sample was collected and was administered the BASC-2, Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI-IV) or the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V) to assess behavior and cognitive functioning. Data was analyzed using MANOVA and multinomial logistic regressions. Results found significant differences between LF-ASD and HF-ASD groups for symptoms of anxiety, withdrawal, adaptability, and functional communication. Children with ASD and NTD children differed significantly from the control group across scales on the BASC-2. Results showed that children with ASD and NTD children scored similarly on scale son the BASC-2; however, both ASD groups scored significantly higher on the developmental social disorder scale DSD) than the NTD group, which is consistent with previous research. The findings suggest emotional/behavioral differences between LF-ASD and HF-ASD, as well as differences between ASD and other NTD populations. It also provided more evidence for the DSD scale possibly serving as a screener for ASD for further diagnostic testing.
