Since the first successful organ transplant in 1954, the field of organ donation and transplantation has become a successful alternative method of treatment for failing or compromised organs. However, despite the advancements made in this field, disparities still exist, especially between organ recipients. Current research suggests that African Americans receive fewer opportunities for transplants and have to wait longer for organs than other ethnic groups. One of the contributing factors to this issue is the low organ donation rates in the African American community, which is partly due to lack of awareness about the topic of organ donation and transplantation in that community. The purpose of this study was to determine what sources of information would most likely influence how African Americans think or act concerning organ donation and transplantation. This study used data from the 2012 National Survey on Organ Donation Attitudes and Behavior, a study sponsored by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration that researched the U.S. population's views towards organ donation and transplantation. This study also applied the Theory of Planned Behavior to determine the factors that affect human behavior, such as the decision to become an organ donor. By determining the sources of information that would most likely influence how African Americans think or act concerning organ donation and transplantation, and what factors contribute to that decision, the findings suggest effective ways of educating African Americans about the need of organ donation, and consequently, could increase organ donation rates in that community.

520 $a The study's findings suggest that the sources of information most likely to influence how African Americans think or act concerning organ donation are: 1) TV advertisement, 2) billboard or poster in a public place, 3) radio advertisement, 4) community health fair (e.g., health fair), 5) senior center, and 6) clergy or religious organization. The study also supported parts of Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior showing that both subjective norms and organ donation attitudes were positively and significantly correlated with intentions to donate organs and that organ donation intentions were indeed positively correlated with organ donation behavior.
