This study examines the fiction of three contemporary Chinese diasporic writers: Gao Xingjian residing in France, Ha Jin in the United States, and Guo Xiaolu in Great Britain. These writers form a coherent group to be examined together because of their shared experiences of transcending geographical, political, cultural and linguistic boundaries between China and the West. For these writers, both their Chinese origins and their cross-cultural experiences of living between China and the West have become essential artistic resources. Displaced from China and their native culture, each writer finds his or her own way to survive and to practice the art of writing fiction in the newly adopted country. Writing becomes a form of agency to rebuild a "home" and refashion a life abroad; in so doing, each author constructs a new self in transition to cope with the destabilizing effects of physical, cultural and spiritual dislocation. These explorations of transitional identities, personal and cultural, are analyzed through a new perspective that identifies previously unrecognized allegorical dimensions in key fictional works of the three writers.
