Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Western Ontario (Canada), 2010.
My integrated article style dissertation is an embodied autoethnography of lived experiences in hockey, figure skating, and yoga. Within my writing-stories, I show how we shape and are shaped by the process of meaning-making through a blend of traditional prose, memory-work, evocative writing, and poetic representation. Each paper possesses individual sporting focuses, form/s of methodological representation, affective and metaphorical intentions, and contribute to the overall purpose of the dissertation.

"A voIce in the Rink: Playing with Our Histories and Evoking Autoethnography," explores memory-work and hockey culture through stories of experiences within a Canadian hockey family. Writing temporally from the early stages in childhood at the rink into the later years of my brother's professional hockey career, I expand upon the range of emotions experienced throughout moments of personal development, bringing voice to my experiences, interpretations, and perceptions within the dynamics of our family and various hockey subcultures. I pose inquiries about autoethnography as a method/olgy itself, and provide my answers to these questions throughout the composition of my paper.

"Her Figures in the rINK: Sk8ing with the Feminine through Autoethnographic Spirals," is an affective, autoethnographic piece that blends reflexive narrative writing and poetic representation to discover how the sporting experiences of the past inform perceptions of Self in the present. Using personal journals, photographs, and recorded performances from skating, I weave my struggles of writing about paradoxical experiences, finding meaning in the memories as a competitive figure skater, and the comprehension of feminine/ity within sport and academic arenas.

"Moksha Rose from the Heart: A Prosaic and Poetic Embodiment of Yoga Autoethnography" is an artistic autoethnographic work that contemplates the essence of yoga and considers ''what is meaning-full?". Integrating multiple embodied and reflexive voices, I share my understandings of Moksha yoga as student, instructor, and doctoral scholar to show the complexities within the processes of writing embodied experiences and personal meaning. The interdisciplinary, layered text blurs research genres to consider yoga culture and to reflect on the connections between mind, body, and soul.

The final chapter of this dissertation entails the discussion, conclusion, and recommendations for further research. Highlighting key substantive and metaphorical linkages and contributions to autoethnography, I discuss the ways these works add to hockey, figure skating, yoga, subcultures, mind-body, feminine/ity, and gender research and suggest opportunities for interdisciplinary, mind-body-soul, and affective autoethnography for the future.
