William Shakespeare was one of the most important points of reference and sources of inspiration for many German writers. Especially his ability to create individuals that resemble true and natural human beings in a way not known before, was initially admired in the baroque era and increasingly in the Age of Enlightenment. The "Sturm and Drang" and - as its role model - young Goethe idolized Shakespeare as a natural genius and strove to emulate his abilities. Under the influence of this in part inspiring in part superior ideal, Goethe wrote the drama Der Gotz von Berlichingen , which declared war on the Aristotelian Unities and integrated the ideal of freedom into the plot as well as the formal structure.

Based on these already existing research findings, this thesis proves that the relationship between Goethes Gotz and the Shakespearian tragedies is of an even more intimate quality. In imitating Shakespeare, Goethe did not confine himself on formal structure, but worked on passages, constellations and characters of the tragedies Antony and Cleopatra and Macbeth and adapted them to a traditional German topic. The result however, the so called Urg¨otz, was so close to the English example that it had to be revised. A comparison of these two versions confirms this strong bond between Goethe and Shakespeare.

As the motif of Cleopatra will be in the center of this treatise, it is essential to understand how Shakespeare and Goethe got acquainted with it. Therefore, the source that both share - the Greek biographer Plutarch and his Vitae parallelae - will be analyzed firstly, in order to deal with the reception of Shakespeare in Germany afterwards. Eventually, the fourth chapter deals with Goethes Gotz von Berlichingen and expatiates the argumentation mentioned above.
