Thesis (Ph.D.)--Gallaudet University, 2017.
The goal of this study is to explore the meaning of boundary as it relates to signed language interpreting work. I am interested in documenting Deaf consumers' expectations and creating a better understanding of how boundaries are set between Deaf consumers and the interpreters they depend upon for communication and interaction. I also hope to discover how Deaf consumers work out their empowerment needs and decision-making in assignments and their environment. This dissertation presents findings from my data, which was collected during in-person interviews with Deaf consumers on the topic of interpreting services. Two themes emerged from my interview data: Deaf consumers (1) expect to have a professional interpreter, whether certified or not, with high levels of expertise, skill, and knowledge in various areas, including cultural; and (2) want to be empowered to make decisions and be involved with assignment negotiations and agreements.
