This qualitative study explores the perceptions and experiences of 25 SME leaders/owners in Gambia and 50 SME leaders/owners in Ghana on challenges that influence the growth of the industry in both countries. Research study participants were selected from the Ghana and Gambia Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The study involved Moustakas' (1996) modified van Kaam method and semi-structured interview questions. The interview responses were completed face-to-face and professionally transcribed and analyzed using Nvivo 11 software.

This study analyzed the SMRE leaders' perceptions and first-hand experiences of challenges that influence the growth of SMREs in Ghana and Gambia. Challenges that emerged from the study were: (a) government policies, (b) business funding sources, (c) organizational leadership, and (d) entrepreneurship. The results of the study may be helpful to SME development in Ghana, Gambia and elsewhere in Sub-Saharan Africa. Findings from the study may assist policy makers in designing meaningful SME policies and could help SME leaders identify funding sources, adopt appropriate leadership styles and acquire entrepreneurial skills that promote SME growth in Ghana, Gambia and SSA.
