Ranking methodologies for estimating campsite impacts have traditionally been used in addition to (and sometimes in place of) actual measures of impacts. Ranking systems are seen as easier to implement; however, there is concern that these methods may not accurately predict actual measures of impact. Multiple methods of campsite impact monitoring (including both ranking and actual measures) were applied within the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area in upstate New York to evaluate how well ranking methodologies compare to each other as well as correlate with quantitative measures. Ranking methodologies were found to produce generally similar results, and the ranking methodologies also significantly correlated with some but not all of the actual measures. Ranking methods can be useful and efficient predictors for some types of impact, but should be used carefully for this purpose. More research is needed to better understand the effectiveness of some monitoring methodologies.
