Climate change has the potential to critically impact tourist visitation rates and the seasonal timing of visitation to national parks in the United States. An increase in visitation into the 'shoulder seasons' of spring and fall may be a likely outcome of higher temperatures during the summer (Amelung et al. 2007). Increases in precipitation may further alter visitation patterns to certain national parks (Lise and Tol 2002). This study analyzed the impact of past climate change in 35 national parks within the United States. Temperature, latitude, and visitation data were used to analyze potential correlations between climate change and park visitation. Using kurtosis values and Spearman correlations, the seasonal nature of park attendance can be evaluated. Parks were grouped into regions to facilitate comparisons between climate zones. Results from the analysis indicate that park visitation is diffusing out from the peak summer months but it is not noticeably increasing during the 'shoulder seasons.' Some parks are exhibiting a strong correlation between climate factors and visitation while others are not.
