Religion is viewed by a majority of elderly Americans as a major influence in their lives. Still, in studies of correlates of life satisfaction, religion has been given secondary status to the major demographic factors of health, social support and socio-economic status. This study has attempted to rectify this situation by incorporating both religion and demographic elements as simultaneous predictors in a proposed model of elderly life satisfaction.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Data in this study were from a 1981 U.S. national probability sample of 1,729 individuals 18 years of age and older. Since the focus was mainly on older individuals, a subsample of persons 55 and above (N = 519) was extracted. Two central research questions; namely, (1) How does religion vary with age? and (2) What effect does religion have on life satisfaction? were tested. As for the first, relative frequencies of religion variables as they vary with age were presented. For the second, zero order associations between religion and life satisfaction, and then multiple regressions, controlling for demographic factors, were tested.

As was expected, the elderly were more religious than the general population. In addition, religiosity increased as persons got older, with the highest involvement rate among the elderly (55 and above) and the lowest among the youngest age group (18-29). When the 55 and above group was further divided into three smaller age groupings, no significant change in any measure of religiosity was found. Within the elderly group, religiosity remained stable.

Only one religion variable was important for the elderly as a direct predictor of life satisfaction. Belief in God significantly affected meaningfulness of life. These were both cognitive measures. Health, marital status and socio-economic status were significant primarily as predictors of the affective life satisfaction measures, loneliness and happiness. As was anticipated, the more temporal demographic characteristics were determinant of the more transient affective outcomes; while the more enduring, intrinsic elements were predictive of the more stable, cognitive outcomes.
