Spiritual direction has long been a ministry of the Church. More recently seminaries have begun formal training in spiritual direction. The prayer-filled relationship between the spiritual director and the "directee" provides the context for discerning God's presence and will. Previous studies on direction have measured "spiritual maturity," awareness of God, attachment to God, one's God image, and surrender to God. This study suggested that a measure of Christian spiritual discernment (CSD) might be a more theoretically appropriate measure. CSD has previously been conceptualized as discerning the presence and will of God through seeking God, honesty with God and others, and waiting on God. A case is also made for the impact of spiritual direction on virtues such as general humility (GH), intellectual humility (IH), and patience (PS), as well as quest religious motivation (Quest) and mindfulness (MAAS). Previous studies have had mixed results regarding the efficacy of direction, which may be due to research design difficulties. To address these difficulties a longitudinal (16-month) repeated-measures study was conducted. Participants (N = 70) were recruited at a Christian seminary to be randomly placed into treatment and control groups during their first semester. The treatment group received an average of 3.8 direction sessions. During subsequent semesters, students participated in 4-6 sessions of spiritual direction. Participants were measured during their first week of seminary (Pretest) and at the end of each semester (Posttests 1-3). Due to attrition, non-linear growth modeling could not be conducted for those who completed the study (N = 32) so linear growth modeling was utilized. ANCOVA analyses did not reveal significant effects for spiritual direction on any of the measures. Post hoc analyses on the randomized control portion of the study (N = 34) did not reveal any significant effects. Some of the analyses suggested a negative trend on Low Concern for Status (GH) and Intellectual Defensiveness (IH) for those in spiritual direction. While the hypotheses were not supported, correlations between CSD and measures of GH, IH, MAAS, and Patience, provided further construct validity for the measure.
