Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2016.
This thesis utilizes both heuristic and hermeneutic methodologies to explore how working with a therapist using an attachment informed approach assists an insecure-avoidant individual in tolerating more intimacy. The research shows that the experience of therapy provides a secure base for the client to create new experiences of relationship, resulting in the ability to change the way one relates to the self and others. Such experiences assist individuals with insecure-avoidant attachment in naming the deactivating strategies that they utilize to avoid intimacy. This awareness leads to new opportunities to move toward intimacy with a desired partner, and increases health, happiness, and satisfaction. The research also indicates that insecure clients show up with specific traits in therapy, traits that can be used clinically to guide interventions and treatment plans.
