This dissertation is a reception-influence study on the cultural, literary and social impact of Henrik Ibsen in twentieth-century China. It consists of two parts, namely, reception and influence. The part on reception deals mainly with the changing Chinese attitudes toward Ibsen in the various periods of modern Chinese history, from the time of political and intellectual chaos at the beginning of this century to the post-Mao era. It includes an investigation of the route of transmission through which Ibsen came to China via Japan and the English speaking world. Chinese translation and production of Ibsen's plays are dealt with as a basis for further investigation of influence. A positivistic approach is employed in this part to establish and support critical evaluation. The part on influence focuses chiefly on the impact of Ibsenian drama and Ibsenism on modern Chinese drama, theatre, and the socio-cultural movements. Besides the influence upon such major Chinese dramatists as T'ien Han, Ou-yang Yu-ch'ien, and Ts'ao Yu, Ibsen has also exerted a tremendous impact on the New Literature Movement, the form of contemporary Chinese theatre, and the emancipation of women, which is reflected in the voluminous works of Chinese fiction. The subject of this research is international in scope and significant to cross-cultural and literary studies. It is by nature related to theatre history, East-West cultural and literary relations, social changes in China, and the global impact of Ibsen. So far no studies as broad as this have been undertaken, though much has been done on the reception and influence of Ibsen in Europe, America, and Japan.Subjects--Topical Terms:
