Thesis (M.A.)--Azusa Pacific University, 2017.
This thesis focuses on emotional synergy and the ways in which art affects an intuitively empathetic response in the viewer. To explore this phenomenon, Abstract Expressionism will be used as a case study; chosen for its artistic philosophy in which the search for purity in emotional expression is the foundation. Due to the deeply individualistic nature of this movement and the diverse creative means employed by those involved, a single artist has been chosen for intimate investigation. A prolific member of the Abstract Expressionist movement, Mark Rothko is nearly unrivaled in his ability to reach the emotional core of his viewership. Through the exploration of Rothko's personal life and artistic practices, a case for an emotionally synergistic interaction between artist and viewer will be argued.
