Background: There is limited information about health behaviors and their contribution to the health of the population within Mali. In Mali, more than 97% of the population belongs to a faith-based organizations (FBOs) but the health promotion needs of these FBOs have not been studied. The purpose of this study was to explore imams' and pastors' perspectives of the health promotion needs of their congregants in Bamako, Mali. Methods: In-depth one-on-one interviews were conducted with imams (n=10) and pastors (n=2) in FBOs in Bamako, Mali. Observations also were carried out to assess the FBOs' physical environment for health-promoting assets. Data analysis: Interviews were transcribed and. Observation data from journal entries were manually entered into a table in which health promotion assets and materials were analyzed for each FBO. Data were analyzed using a content analysis approach guided by the social ecological model. Results: At the individual level, leaders frequently mentioned poverty and affordability as challenges perceived by their congregants. At the interpersonal level, imams and pastors mentioned financial contributions as how their congregants support each other. At the organizational level, the main health activity in the FBOs was cleaning (hygiene) and the main challenge was lack of knowledge of leaders about health and health programs. Further, at this level, only the two churches had at least one health promotion program. At the policy level, imams and pastors often mentioned the need of government action to improve the health of congregants. Conclusions. Imams reported that they lack of knowledge about health programs and there were no health programs in mosques. Future studies should focus on how to empower FBOs in Bamako. Education programs for imams and pastors, and development of healthy lifestyle programs should be priorities in FBOs within Mali.
