When a student begins his or her academic journey in higher education, it is incumbent on the leadership of these institutions to recognize and value the importance of 1) early student engagement in the institution, which will lead to 2) increased student persistence semester-to-semester, which will lead to 3) improved student learning and self-confidence, which will lead to 4) the increased potential for student graduation/completion, which will ultimately lead to 5) self-sustaining citizens in America's communities. Each step along the students' journey must be supported with relevant coursework conducted within a nurturing yet challenging environment.
