Thesis (Ph.D.)--The New School, 2014.
The current study aims to explore the relationship between infant-mother attachment disorganization using the Strange Situation and maternal personality functioning using the Revised Adult Personality Functioning Assessment (RAPFA); and add to exiting literature on adult social functioning using the Relationship Questionnaire - Clinical Version, SCID-II, and RAPFA, while integrating aspects of social domain theory, attachment theory, and psychiatry as they relate to social development. Participants were members of the Wirral Child Health and Development Study. From a general population sample of 1233 first time mothers recruited at 20-weeks gestation, we drew a stratified random sample of 316 for assessment at 32-weeks based on reported inter-partner psychological abuse. The current participants were identified from the 268 intensive sample dyads that participated in a 3-hour laboratory assessment at 56 weeks. The three-way distribution of infant attachment is similar to previous findings (20/60/20). The rate of infant-mother attachment disorganization was higher than expected (33%). Infant attachment disorganization was associated with maternal domain disorganization (p = .005). A preoccupied attachment style was positively associated with romantic domain dysfunction while dismissing avoidance and profound distrust were negatively associated with romantic dysfunction (p <.01). Symptoms of Borderline and Antisocial Personality Disorder significantly predicted the presence of romantic domain dysfunction (p < .01). Borderline Personality Disorder significantly predicted domain disorganization (p = .003). Maternal BPD symptoms were associated with high ratings of infant attachment disorganization and Avoidant PD symptoms were negatively associated with high ratings of infant disorganization. These initial findings indicate that maternal domain disorganization is strongly related to infant attachment disorganization. Additionally, the current research captures the relationship between a preoccupied attachment style, cluster B personality disorders, and romantic dysfunction, while replicating previous findings that BPD predicts domain disorganization.
