An unexamined life ruminates in the unconscious. What is believed to be "sick"---unwelcome, mired in madness, unbecoming---may offer a rite of passage, an adventure of ongoing individuation that serves not only the individual, but also the community. For those who have encountered suffering and been misunderstood, and those who counsel them, this thesis will help to soothe and offer a shift of seeing into those dark times and melancholic moods as a portal for soul travel to collect data from lived experiences. Much creation, purpose, and passion can emerge from dark nights. Knowing one's own darkness can help one deal with the darkness in others, and when darkness is engaged without judgment or denial, but rather with radical acceptance, one is better able to serve others. A heuristic methodology is used to make sense out of the shadows of melancholic encounters.
