Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2017.
Many books and articles have been written on the mother archetype and how it is constellated throughout human life. There are also different variations of the Hero's Journey and how it relates to the process of individuation and differentiation. However, little has been written on how these concepts contribute to eating pathologies and what a psychotherapeutic recovery process could look like from a depth psychological perspective. Current mainstream psychological and medical information about and understanding of eating disorders lacks a deep psychological perspective as to why they are developed and how to approach recovery from them. Using hermeneutic and heuristic research methodologies, this thesis focuses on how archetypal characteristics of mother influence the development of disordered eating pathologies and how understanding and acknowledging various depth psychological concepts can influence recovery. Some of the author's personal experience is offered to illustrate concepts highlighted in this thesis.
