One of the major changes that the mental health field has experienced over the past 20 years is the implementation of Evidenced Based Practice and the subsequent development of Empirically Supported Treatments (manualized treatment protocols). This development created a great deal of debate as to whether manualized treatment (technique) is or should be a major contributing factor in the therapeutic process. The focus of this study was to explore and gain insight into how therapists experience using a manual (Parent Child Interaction Therapy) to guide the therapy process. Additionally, the research explored how the use of a manual impacted the development and growth of the therapeutic relationship. Lastly, data analysis revealed that clinical and practical skill cannot be defined and delineated into a theory-driven scientific approach.

Interpretive phenomenological analysis is a qualitative approach that is designed to provide researchers with the tools to allow for a detailed examination of the lived experiences of their participants. This research utilized the theoretical underpinnings of Heidegger's philosophy to discover the lived experiences of therapists who used a manualized approach (in this case Parent Child Interaction Therapy) to guide the process of therapy. Nine participants provided narratives by participating in two separate interviews. During the process of analyzing the data, transcripts, and field notes five themes were identified. They are as follows: building and attuning with the client to develop the therapeutic relationship; the utilization of a manual as a negative impact on the therapeutic relationship and the parent-child relationship; the utilization of the manual as a positive impact on the therapeutic relationship and the parent-child relationship; self-of-the-therapist issues impacting the therapeutic process; and the impact of clinical decision making while utilizing a manual. One of the major implications from this study is that the therapeutic relationship is of utmost importance throughout the process of therapy and that the use of a manual can detract from this important therapeutic factor. The findings suggest that manuals provide some direction, however, when therapists employ strategies detailed in the manual they must utilize judgment grounded in clinical skills and practical knowledge, which is often outside the manual's ability to address. Lastly, the body of the paper addresses limitations, future research and clinical implications.
