The six operas analyzed in this dissertation present the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice as it addresses the search for meaning by the artist, musician, and poet. The artistry of the composers teaches the audience that music is analogous to a state of being that unifies both the material and the symbolic worlds.

From opera's beginning in the early 1600s to the present day, composers and librettists have chosen to retell the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice because it is a story of the power of music. The myth gives them a unique opportunity to create powerfully moving vocal lamentations of the suffering caused by death. For Orpheus, it is the suffering over the death of what he loves most and his heroic effort to answer the basic riddle, "Who am I and where am I going without my beloved?" The opera's creators focus on Orpheus' descent into the underworld as his attempt to undo the death, often with tragic results, such as Orpheus' own death.

Orpheus is a human being who is facing the horrible truth that no matter how talented he is or intelligently he bargains with the gods, he cannot bring back his dead wife. This dissertation shows how the operas mythologize death by transforming the raw truth into a symbolic and refined cultural experience in art. From a historical perspective, the operas show how the understanding of the marriage of Orpheus and Eurydice has evolved during the 400-year history of opera. From a psychological perspective, the operas present Orpheus' struggle to bring back the feminine aspect of his lost self, his anima, through an inner marriage that enables him to look forward and create something new that will endure.
