This qualitative case study explored the spatial and waste disposal environmental challenges associated with the liberalization of the telecommunications industry in Jamaica. The specific problem addressed in this qualitative case study is the environmental degradation in Jamaica due to the liberalization of the telecommunications industry in terms of visual contamination and electronic waste (such as television sets, radios, and cellular telephones). The factors affecting environmental degradation contingent on the liberalization of the telecommunications industry in Jamaica were unknown (Valberg et al., 2007). The study was based on the qualitative methodology, using a case study design, incorporating primary data derived from semi-structured, in-depth, naturalistic interviews. The participants were key industry leaders, who transcended the metamorphosis of the industry from a monopolistic regime to a fully liberalized competitive regime. The evolution of the telecommunications sector in the post-liberalization era will be explored to identify knowledge claims relative to the environment. Like the telecommunications industry in the pre-liberalization era, other utilities in Jamaica remain monopoly service providers and are potential candidates for liberalization and could benefit from the findings of this exploratory research. Further, telecommunications sectors in countries such as the Bahamas and Costa Rica are still monopolies or are at the embryonic stages of liberalization and the introduction of competition and could incorporate the findings of this study in their strategic decisions. The study is also significant because despite the growth in mobile telecommunications services the knowledge base regarding the potential deleterious effects of such services remained low and appropriate corrective action may be imperative for safeguarding the environment and the citizen.
