The contributions of ceramic artist David Shaner (1934-2002) are important, as they parallel the recent historical evolution of American ceramics. Shaner produced an exquisitely crafted body of work that speaks clearly of the nature of the material and the maker, conjures reflections on the sublimity of nature, and the traditions and culture of ceramics. The spiritual influences that guided Shaner's work were based in his relationship with nature, which was a constant inspiration and theme in his work. Throughout American history, ceramics has evolved from craft to fine art, as concept and meaning took precedence over function. I am interested in exploring the complex relationship between human beings, and their definition of art within the realm of ceramics. Shaner paired his education at Alfred University, an institution which emphasized technical knowledge and craftsmanship, with his love of nature, to cultivate a very personal aesthetic. He was one of the first ceramic artists to unite meaning and craft. Shaner was a distinguished studio potter, teacher, collector, and was instrumental in establishing the Archie Bray Foundation as a major player in ceramics. Central texts that establish past and present ceramic history include Janet Koplos and Bruce Metcalf's Makers: A History of American Studio Craft, and Martha Drexler Lynn's American Studio Ceramics: Innovation and Identity 1940-1979. Theories that help explore the transition ceramics took within the art world, include writings in Howard Risatti's A Theory of Craft: Function and Aesthetic Expression, and Glenn Adamson's The Invention of Craft and Thinking Through Craft. Shaner's role in this transition is revealed with the collaboration that was edited by Peter Held, Following the Rhythms of Life: The Ceramic Art of David Shaner, Shaner's own Artist Statement and interviews with Ann Shaner; the artist's wife, and Patrick Horsley; an artist that knew and worked with him. The history of ceramic art in America during the mid 1900s to present evolved from craft to fine art, and David Shaner's career offers insight to expand our understanding of that evolution.
