Thesis (M.L.A.S.)--Western Illinois University, 2017.
Public intellectuals are a socially active group, but are seldom studied as politically and socially active individuals. Instead of focusing on public intellectuals as a historic group or subgroup, this research focuses on the public intellectual as a politically active agent. Chris Hedges and William Kristol are both public intellectuals known for their opposing political viewpoints and fit in the typical demographic of a public intellectual. Additionally, both choose to focus on different approaches based on Robert Hariman's political writing style analysis. Collecting eight articles from each case study during the first six months of 2015, all articles are rhetorically analyzed, with particular attention to reasoning and voice. The analysis explained how both public intellectuals are able to not only get their message across, but also how they were able to achieve getting their message across. Through examining rhetoric and how rhetorical style impacts socially active public intellectuals, this essay argues why public intellectuals are significant political agents with vast understanding of their awareness of how they fit into a politically engaging society which enables such individuals to be public intellectuals. Finally, further research and limitations in regards to public intellectuals in an increasingly public and social world conclude this research.
